Land of the Free, Yeah Right

For all of you that have been saying the government will never ban online poker it's to popular. Or don't worry the anti gambling bill still has to go for a vote in the Senate and it will never pass there. Guess what? They did it. Senate majority leader Bill Frist(R)Tenn. managed to attach anti gaming language to a ports security bill that was rushed through congress late last night. This legislation's main focus was on port security. and there was no recorded vote as no one in congress wants to be pro- terrorist.

The legislation is not aimed at poker players themselves but at site operators and the financial institutions that fund player's accounts. Here is a good summary of the legislation. You can also read more about the subject at Poker News.

National Right for Online Gambling

NROG's Radio Men up to the Task
by Emily Swoboda (IGN)

Two veterans of the radio broadcasting business are mounting a campaign against legislative attempts to take away American citizens' right to gamble online.

Brian Jakusik and Jay Bailey, who worked together in radio for seven years, have started a non-profit organization with the primary goal of making the American public more aware of the online gambling industry. Their creation, the National Right for Online Gambling (NROG), got of the ground

"We can't make people's minds up," Jakusik, executive director, said. "All we can do is provide them with the other side. There's so much free publicity out there right now for the bill and it's all bad publicity. It's all arrests; it's all racketeering charges and things of that nature and that's all the American people are seeing. And what I think we're going to be able to do is provide the other side of the coin so they can become as outraged as we are."

Bailey was an on-air radio personality for 12 years, and Jakusik was in the industry for 16 years as a general manager and sales executive at several stations. The duo intends to use their skill sets and backgrounds in radio and advertising to launch a major media campaign. Read More.......

Your Help Needed To Save Online Poker

From Michael Bolcerek, Poker Players Alliance President:

Dear PPA Member:

Your urgent action is needed! On September 12th the Poker Players Alliance with the support of leading poker blogs and forums, PocketFives.com, Wicked Chops Poker and others are organizing a “Phone March” on Capitol Hill. From 9:00 AM Eastern Time, until 5:30 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday, September 12th, we are asking all PPA members and anyone interested in defending poker to call this toll free number, 800-289-1136 and be patched through to one of your two U.S. Senators in Washington D.C. When you call the 800 number you will hear a recording from fellow PPA member Greg “Fossilman” Raymer and then you will be prompted to enter your five digit zip code so you can be directed, free of charge, to your Senator’s office.

Note: The 800 number will only be active between 9:00 AM EST and 5:30 PM EST on Tuesday September 12.

Key points you should make:

* I am voter in your state.
* I strongly oppose any legislation that would prohibit online poker, and urge the Senator to vote against such legislation.
* Poker is a skill game enjoyed by 70 Million Americans.
* The Senator should seek to regulate online poker much like the government regulates other forms of gaming, like lotteries.
* Prohibitions don’t work. Any legislation that tries to ban online poker will only drive those players underground.
* Again, I urge the Senator to oppose any attempts to prohibit me from playing the great American game of poker on the Internet.

The threat to poker is real. Please forward this information to everyone you know who cares about poker and an American’s freedom to use the Internet. We need everyone possible to make their voice heard on September 12th!

Sincerely,

Michael Bolcerek

President

Poker Players Alliance

I am going to do this and I encourage anyone who wishes to continue to play poker online to also call. It will only take 5 min of your day and all you have to do is mention the bullet points above.
