10 Best Christmas Gifts for Poker Players
With Christmas 2008 quickly approaching, it's about time to start your holiday shopping. Having experienced more than my fair share of crappy Christmas gifts in the past, I realize poker players can be a difficult lot to shop for. So to help those looking to surprise their favorite poker player this holiday season, I've drafted what I call Strat's X-mas wish list. These are all great gift ideas I guarantee will bring a smile to any poker player who is lucky enough to find one of these items under the tree come Christmas morning.
- Books
There are many good books on poker strategy, but the bible has to be Doyle Brunson's Super System. As a 10 time WSOP bracelet winner, Texas Dolly covers the strategy that has made him the famous player that he is. This book has been around for quite awhile but is a must read for any serous poker player. If the person your buying for loves tournaments, then there is no doubt he will treasure Harrington on Hold 'em. This two part series is the quintessential strategy for tournament play and sure to increase any readers bankroll. - Video/DVD
Everyone enjoys relaxing with beer and pizza while watching their favorite movie. My suggestions for this holiday season are two classic poker movies, Rounders The Collector's Edition (1998), starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton and The Cincinnati Kid(1965), starring Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson. Both these movies are guaranteed hits sure to entertain any poker player. - Chip Sets
If your player has been thinking about hosting poker night, then they will surely enjoy a Crown Wheatear Poker Chips Set. This set features 500 real clay 11.5 gram chips that give the sound and feel of those used in the casinos. The set includes a couple decks of cards, dealer's buttons, dice and an all aluminum reinforced case. You can't go wrong by leaving this under the Christmas tree. - Apparel
There is no better way to show off an interest in poker than sporting a t-shirt or hat with a great poker design. The Poker Chaos Store has t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and many other apparel items with excellent designs for both men and women players. - Poker Tracker
If your poker player is the nerdy type, he will love this software. It allows you to download hand histories from online poker sites into a database so that you can analyze every aspect of your game play. It is a great tool for filling holes in your game. The experts, those that actually make a profit playing poker swear by it. Poker Tracker Website - Mouse Pad Pro
This is a no limit hold'em cheat sheet that is printed on a mouse pad. The Mouse Pad Poker Pro gives you all the critical information you need to make good decisions, which is the key to playing winning poker. It tells you what starting hands to play, what positions to play them from and is adjustable for tight or loose play. It is like having a poker pro next to you while you play online. - Poker Table
Another item needed for hosting a home game is a poker table. There are a wide range of table, from the inexpensive type that you unfold onto your kitchen or dining room table to the high class casino type with expensive chair sets. A google search will give you a large list of suppliers. - Computer Monitor
Online poker players can increase their profit by playing several tables at once. Multi-tabling is much easier on the eyes when you have a high resolution monitor. I think most players would be happy with a LCD type with a resolution of 1600 x 1200 or higher. Here is a comparison page that shows some of the better high resolution monitors and prices. - Poker Calendar
With 2010 fast approaching, a calendar with poker designs makes a great gift. The new 2010 Poker Chaos wall calendar features twelve of our most popular designs, a new one for each month. Printed on 100lb cover weight paper this 11x17 sized calendar provides a great way for your favorite poker player to keep track of their tournament schedule. - World Series of Poker Seat
The ultimate poker gift, a $10,000 seat to next years World Series of Poker. Every poker player dreams of winning this event. Just participating is a great honor, getting to rub elbows and match wits with the best in game. The schedule for the 2010 series has not been released yet, but should be available soon. All the information on dates and locations as well as pre-registration forms will be available at this site.

Poker and the Military
The history of poker includes many players that learned the game while serving in the U.S. Military. This list includes several Commander and Chiefs. Warren Harding, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon were all known to enjoy the game. Nixon won $6000 dollars while serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII and used the money to fund his first campaign for congress. Harding played at least twice a week. His advisors got the nickname "the poker cabinet" because they played with the President. It is rumored that he even lost a complete set of White House china in a game.
World Series of Poker winners Brian "Sailor" Roberts and Puggy Pearson both honed their poker skills while serving in the Navy.
In honor of past and present military poker players, PokerChaos has created a series of armed forces poker team t-shirts. Support our troops and show your interest in the game of poker. Join one of these poker teams:

PPA August Newsletter
Dear Fellow PPA Member:
Thanks to your efforts, we have made tremendous progress in our fight to protect the rights of poker players. More than 40 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have committed to clarifying federal laws to preserve your ability to play poker online. But we still need your help to get the attention of every U.S. Representative.
Congress is in recess for August and your Representative will be returning home to host local events and town hall meetings. These are great opportunities to tell them that poker is not a crime and to support H.R. 2046, the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act and H.R. 2610, the Skill Game Protection Act.
Here's how to find out when these events are happening:
1. Get the phone number of your U.S. Representative's hometown office by clicking here and entering your ZIP Code.
2. Call to ask when and where these events are taking place in the month of August.
3. Go to one of these events and bring your fellow poker players. Tell your U.S. Representative that poker is not a crime and to co-sponsor H.R. 2046 and H.R. 2610 when they return to Washington. Let them know that you will support them if they support the rights of law-abiding poker players.
Thank you for being an "August Advocate" for the Poker Players Alliance.

Mouse Pad Poker Pro
This is way more than just a mouse pad. It is your ticket to winning big playing online poker. I have been playing micro and small stakes Texas hold'em poker for over five years now, never having to make a deposit to fund my bankroll. Starting with money won in freerolls, I have managed to build substantial bankrolls at multiple sites and can honestly say I am in the elite group of poker players that in the long run, make a profit playing poker.
I have read the books of great poker players like Brunson, Sklansky, Harrington, Helmuth and more. I have taken this information along with the experience of playing over one million hands myself and created a strategy that anyone can use to make money playing online poker. This strategy has been condensed to a page full of information and graphics that have been imprinted onto a mouse pad so that you have the basic strategy right at your side. The Mouse Pad Poker Pro is like have a professional poker player coaching you during each hand. It is a cheat sheet that provides you with the following information:
This mouse pad is a great gift idea, Christmas is fast approaching and the poker player in your family will really thank you for this present once the winnings start rolling in.
If you have already purchased the Mouse Pad Poker Pro, the following are your operating instructions:
The two most important aspects of Texas Hold'em are What starting hands to play and table position. By simply following the directions pertaining to these aspects you are going to improve your game profits dramatically.
Starting Hands
The system is broken down to show what starting hands you should play based on what position you are in at the table. Starting hands are categorized into eight groups, one being the strongest and progressively get weaker with each successive group, eight being the weakest group hands. (The s indicates cards that are both of the same suit)
Group 1: AA, KK, AKs
Group 2: QQ, JJ, AK, AQs, AJs, KQs
Group 3: TT, AQ, ATs, KJs, QJs, JTs
Group 4: 99, 88, AJ, AT, KQ, KTs, QTs, J9s, T9s, 98s
Group 5: 77, 66, A9s, A5s-A2s, K9s, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, Q9s, JT, QJ, T8s, 97s, 87s, 76s, 65s
Group 6: 55, 44, 33, 22, K9, J9, 86s
Group 7: T9, 98, 85s
Group 8: Q9, J8, T8, 87, 76, 65
Table Positions
The Mouse Pad Poker Pro uses color codes to identify table positions. Green positions, dealer, Cut Off and Cut Off+1, give you the best advantage in the hand as you will be last or towards the last to act in each round of betting. When you are in these positions you can play weaker starting hands as you have the advantage of knowing how the other players are going to act. I recommend you only play hands from group 1 thru 6 in these positions. As you get farther away from the dealers button you will be playing from the yellow or middle positions. From these positions you will tighten up and only play starting hands from groups 1 thru 3. The positions shown in red are the big and small blinds and under the gun positions. Here is where you want to really tighten up and only play starting hands from group 1 and 2. You can defend your big blind but fold to any bet unless you have a powerhouse hand.
Pre Flop Betting Strategy
If you hold AA, KK, QQ, or JJ yo have a good chance of winning the hand without improvement if you only have one opponent in the hand. based on this, you want to try and limit the number of players in the hand by betting. Usually 3 to 5 times the big blind amount. With AA, KK and QQ you will want to re-raise any bets to the amount of the pot.
Outs and Basic Probability
After the flop your betting strategy is based on the probability chance that you will have the winning hand and the amount of money to be won in the pot. This is know as your pot odds. To determine this you will first need to know how many "outs" you have.
Outs are cards that are left in the deck that will improve your hand or make it the winning hand. For example, if your starting hand is the jack and queen of spades. The flop gives you two more spade, you know that out of the thirteen possible spades in the deck, nine are unaccounted for. Any one of these nine spades would give you a flush and are considered outs. If the two spades on the flop were the 9s and 10s you would also have the possibility of making a straight with the 8h, 8d or 8c, giving you three more outs. The 8s has already been counted so you now have 12 outs. You would also make the straight with the Kh, Kd or Kc which gives you three more outs for a total of 15 outs. you can look at the MPPP and see that with 15 outs and the turn and river yet to come you have a 54.1 percent chance of making the winning hand.
Next you will take this percent chance of winning the hand and calculate your pot odds. Simply put, pot odds are the odds that the is offering you in relation to the size of the bet you are making or calling. For example, if a sole opponent bets .8 cents into a .72 cent pot (to create a .80 pot)then you are getting pot odds of 10 to 1 or a 10 percent. You divide the amount of the pot by the amount of the bet you will have to make to stay in the hand to determine this percentage. If the percent chance of winning the hand is greater than 10 percent, you want to bet or make the call. Calculating pot odds will take some practice but with the help of the Mouse Pad Poker Pro, it will soon become second nature to you.
Keep in mind when playing micro and small stakes online poker that most players at these stakes are not very safistacated. If someone is betting heavily, he more than likely has a good hand. If someone is betting weakly, chances are he is on a drawing hand or has a weak hand. At these levels it is not profitable to make fancy plays or bluff with nothing. Player just don't know when they should fold. Stick to your gut feeling, along with solid starting hands from the power positions outlined on the Mouse Pad Poker Pro and you will be profitable. Get yours today, read more on poker strategy here at Poker chaos and with a little good luck you will be raking in the pots.
The Mouse Pad Poker Pro is only $14.99 and is available exclusively at the Poker & Chaos Store Click here to purchase

The Grinder T-Shirt Design
This t-shirt design was inspired by how I feel about poker lately. I've played so many hands I feel like a meat grinder that you clamp on the side of the table. The dealer throws my cards into the top and I grind out a few chips. I take the badbeats, try to make the best decisions and just keep grinding. I've gotten to the point I don't even participate in table chat, just grind away hand after hand. Notice the sour face on the chips the grinder spits out. Maybe it's time to take a break from poker for awhile. Nah, I'll just keep grinding.
you can get you own Grinder t-shirt in the PokerChaos Store.

Poker in Prison
Inmates in Florida's correctional system received gifts yesterday in the form of decks of playing cards. These cards are designed to highlight 104 of Florida's unsolved criminal cases. Officials hopes are that one of the prisoner will read about a case and come forward with new information. This is kind of like the Military and their deck of 52 terrorist cards. Read more...

There might be hope for online poker yet.
Finally someone in Congress is showing some resemblance to intelligence. Florida's Congressman Robert Wexler recently introduced legislation that would provide a "carve out" in the UIGEA for online poker, same as those that now exist for horse racing and lotteries. The reason suggested for the carve out is based on the premise that poker is a game of skill. Wow, who would have guessed? You can read more from Congressman Wexler in his online interview with Pokernews.com

Latest Update From Sen. Al D'Amato of PPA
Dear PPA Members,
We have accomplished so much in so little time! Our membership has grown more than 500% since the first of the year, to over 600,000 members -- thanks in no small part to you telling your fellow poker enthusiasts to join our cause. We are well on our way to our One Million Member target, and I again ask for your help by encouraging your family, friends and tablemates to join the PPA.
In Washington: Things are moving and moving fast. There are 4 bills pending in the House of Representatives that are helpful for on-line poker and our members. We are strongly supporting two of these bills: Congressman Barney Frank's H.R. 2046, the "Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act" and Congressman Robert Wexler's H.R. 2610, the "Skill Games Protection Act".
Other bills include Congresswoman Shelley Berkley's H.R. 2410, which calls for a study of Internet Gaming, and Congressman McDermott's H.R. 2607, which amends H.R. 2610 with a revenue component.
In all, we have a lot of momentum, but we still need your help. I just returned from the World Series of Poker, where PPA hosted Congressman Wexler. We saw first-hand the growth and grandeur of the sport of poker, and we asked the WSOP players for their support. They responded in droves, proving that poker enthusiasts are dedicated activists.
As you know, we are a membership-driven organization and we need your support. We lobby on Capitol Hill and in state capitols to defend poker, but these efforts are not without cost.
We know you agree that poker is not a crime...but we need your help to prevent the coming of the day when the law says it is. Can you assist with an ante up of $5 or more and donate to the PPA, or can you upgrade your membership from an introductory membership to a full membership or even a supporting membership? If you are already a full member, can you consider donating an additional amount for the 2007 campaign?
Please also note we have a store where you can purchase merchandise from PPA hats and t-shirts, to PPA poker tables. Proceeds from these sales go directly to fund our campaign for poker and keep us going strong. Please spare what you can -- think of it as putting in your Ante to say you're Proud to Play Poker!

Proof Poker is Only a Game of Luck
"A municipal court in the suburb of Lyngby, Denmark declared that poker is not merely a game of chance but also requires skill, and is therefore legitimate competition".
Based on this declaration, you have to believe that this Danish Judge has never seen Gus Hansen play. If the Danish think poker is a game of skill, I'm convinced it's purely luck.

For those of you who don't know, Antanas Guoga A.K.A. Tony G. is a Professional poker player born in Lithuania and raised in Australia. He has risen to fame with his rude and obnoxious behavior at the poker table.
He has been involved in many online poker ventures. Once being the CEO of PokerChamps when they sold out to Betfair and threw all their U.S. affiliates to the curb with only one days notice. He also did the same to the foolish who followed him to his new site Tony G Poker.
Get this, he is now principle owner of Pokernews.com which negotiated a deal with Bluff Magazine to be the exclusive provider of updates and chip counts, which he is posting on PokerNews. Now he is whining because it appears that the folks at cardplayer.com are taken the posted results and displaying them on their site. He claims that he is the sole owner of this news and has copyright on it. Check out this blog post where he whines and threatens to sue the Shulmans, owners of Cardplayer.com.
Guess what Tony, you don't own the news. You have copyright on the way you present it but the news is fair game for all. What is being done to you is unethical and slimy just like your treatment of U.S. players but it's entirely legal. If the Shulman's decide to stop posting your updates it's because they do act with some semblance of ethics in which you know nothing of. If the old saying "what comes around goes around" is true, be prepared, there is a lot more of this shit coming your way.

Legalize Online Poker T-Shirt
Although the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 did not specifically make online poker illegal it's restrictions on the associated banking transaction has essentially created a form of prohibition on the game.
There are efforts underway to overturn the UIEGA with legislation that would regulate and tax online poker in the USA. One of the major obstacles in getting this type legislation passed is the fact that most Americans are not aware of how Congress has taken away our basic rights to do whatever we choose in the privacy of our own homes with our own money. That or they just don't care.
Help educate America about this injustice, their hobby could be next. Show your support for legalized online poker with this new t-shirt design.

Joy Miller Screws Terrence Chan
I've posted in the past about a charity tourney to be played in the Playboy Mansion and how you could win a chance to participate. Well it seems that the organizer of the event, Joy Miller has her head squarely up her ass and doesn't seem to have any clue how to run a poker tournament, the power of the internet or what the meaning of integrity is. This is a story that has been brought to my attention by Bill's Blog and I'm going to direct you there to get the jest of how her incompetence associated with ignorant arrogance has cost Terrence a seat to WSOP and is soon to destroy her reputation in the poker world. Start with the post at Bill's Blog but all the associated links to this story are below.

There will be no justice until Terrence gets his WSOP seat. Hef, since this woman won't do what's right, show her how it's done and give the man a seat. Your name is associated with this BS.
Granted it was a charity event but if the outcome was of no consquence there shouldn't have been any advertisted prizes.
If you feel like I do, that at a properly run tournament, something like this should never be in question. Give Joy a piece of yor mind. joyjoy712003@yahoo.com, 310-621-7005
***UPDATE***
After writing this post I sent this email to Joy:
Joy's response to the above:
You can see from the above that Joy dosen't think this involves anyone that was not at the event. Think again Ms Miller. You may not want to discuss this anymore but I doubt you've heard the end of this.

Joy,
Show some integrity, admit you screwed up and award Give Terrence a seat to the WSOP.
Sincerely,
Chuck Peters
Joy's response to the above:
terrence never got screwed. has anyone bothered to ask what happened at the end? i'm tired of strangers who weren't there giving their two cents, but since you didn't scream profanities/racist comments at me for the first time today, i'll give you the end.My rebuttal:
William was slowing the game up considerably and we were trying to move him along. As for how the tournament ended, we only had a few options. It was either give them 5 minutes to play or to go one more round of play.
There were 5 players left when the announcement that we would go one more round was made. I know it doesn't seem fair to those of you on the outside, but we had to find a winner to the event. it wasnt held at the Caesar's poker room, it was the PLAYBOY MANSION. we had a time limit----the end.
Shannon was the short stack and had the button when we made this announcement. Hand #1 she moved in with a8 against aj and spiked an 8 on the river to double up. Hand #2 Shannon moved in against aq with a9 and spiked a 9 on the flop to eliminate a player. Hand #3 steve eliminated William to put him in second place. Nobody colluded, There were only 2 hands remaining and they both knew that they could fold out and win the two seats. As
for Annie telling Steve what to do she never influenced his action in any way.
maybe someone should ask terrence what he came in to the final table with. sooo interesting that everyone has wasted time focusing on ME and speculating about my actions AFTER the event. terrence didn't win, it was fair, and people posting/talking about me isn't going to change that.
By the way the whole basis for the tournament was to raise money for the uhi charity and that was our main priority. Everybody was encouraged to have fun, This tournament
was ran for the purpose of giving the patrons a chance to play with poker pros and celebrities while raising money for a great cause. That is just what we did
sorry if you feel terrence deserves a seat-he doesn't. but he's more than welcome to the prize that he won.
i do not want to have to talk about this anymore, as it doesn't affect anyone who wasn't there.
Joy,
Granted, i'm sure your pissed because all of us were not there and it appears that it's none of our business but the fact is you were in charge of this tourney and the way you respond to this situation could directly affect how and if I and many others support this event in the future. I did advertise this event and promote involvement on my blog.
Changing the format of the tournament midway certainly gave some an undue advantage and is just plain wrong. If Annie was coaching Steve its makes no difference if Steve accepted the advice or not, it's collusion and would never be tollerated at any reputable event.
I understand that this was a charity event and I commend you for your intentions but if the financial outcome for the players were of no consequence then prizes should not have been advertised.
Bottom line, I suggest you take the high ground, admit improprieties took place and give Terrence a seat, even tho you think he approached this situation improperly. I believe all involved will benefit from this approach in the long run.
Sincerely,
Chuck Peters

Shana Hiatt, Bad for Poker
No doubt that NBC did not hire Shana Hiatt for her brains but I would have never guessed that her lack of intellectual capacity could have cast the kind of blow to poker that she did Sunday. During the telecast of NBC Sports Special National Heads-Up Poker Championship, Shana goes to interview the legendary Doyle Brunson who is setting is the stands. She asks Doyle why he is a spectator and not playing in the match. Doyles response was that "for the first time in 50 years I have lost my passion for poker. Ever since the passage of the UIGEA and the way congress pa..." That's right, Shana cut him off in mid speech. She totally changed the subject. I have to say I was and still am, unbelievably pissed. I wanted to reach through the screen and choke the bitch.
One of the biggest problems facing online poker and the efforts to overturn the UIGEA is a lack of information by average Americans as to exactly what congress did to our freedoms when they piggy backed this bullshit legislation onto a very important ports security bill. It was and still is an atrocity to the democratic process and was never brought to light in the main stream media. If it's not some fucking lunatic mass murdering wack job or a blond blombshell's drugged out behavior resulting in her own death. The so called "news channels" won't give it any attention, it's not "entertaining enough". Then when there is an opportunity to bring light to the subject in front of a major audience, what happens. Shanna Hiatt can't stick a sock in it long enough to let Doyle speak his mind. Shanna, go back to doing something your good at, posing nude with your mouth shut.

Something New
I haven't posted much lately, been working on a publishing a WebComic and in the process of research I discovered +EV. This from the sites forum:
Take a minute and check the site out, it's funny as hell.
+EV is a poker comic that launched on August 11, 2006, and runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The title stands for "positive expected value," a poker/gambling term meaning a play or bet that you can expect to make money on in the long run. It's a humor strip about a guy who quit his job to play online poker and how that affects his family life with his wife and young daughter. It's for big poker fans or people who know big poker fans! Many players have told me that their wives/girlfriends even like it more than they do, since a lot of the comics poke fun at the poker obsessed husband.

Alfonse D'Amato to lead the PPA
PPA News Release 05 Mar 07
Washington D.C.(March 5, 2007) – The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), a grassroots organization of more than 160,000 poker enthusiasts, announced today that former United States Senator Alfonse D'Amato has joined the PPA to serve as Chairman of the Board and help lead efforts in Washington D.C. to protect the game of poker.
"I have had a passion for poker since my childhood, and for politics almost as long. This new position will allow me to fuse these passions and help establish sensible policy that allows Americans to enjoy the great game of poker in the venue of their choosing," said Alfonse D'Amato, the new Chairman of the Poker Players Alliance.
"We are thrilled to have Senator D'Amato take up our cause to promote and protect the game played by millions of Americans. His enthusiasm, tenacity and political astuteness will bolster the influence of the PPA and help earn poker a much deserved exemption from the recent online gaming law," said Michael Bolcerek, president of the PPA. "For the past 18 months Linda Johnson, the First Lady of Poker, skillfully lead our organization as Chairwoman, today the First Senator of Poker will lead the charge."
It is estimated that more than 23 million Americans enjoyed playing poker on the Internet in 2006. Yet, the recent government crackdown on Internet gaming has swept poker into its net of prohibition and have made it increasingly difficult for poker players to enjoy this great form of entertainment on the Internet. The Poker Players Alliance will be working with Congress to provide a skill game exemption for poker and pave the way for eventual regulation and taxation of the industry in the United States.
"Prohibitions don't work, they only create unintended consequences. The American people know this and we are going to make sure Congress knows it too," said Senator D'Amato. "We need common sense regulation of Internet poker. Prohibition will only drive the industry underground and strip away any protections for children and services for problem gamblers."
The Poker Players Alliance was formed in 2005 to protect the right of poker players to enjoy the great American tradition of poker in the venue of their choice, and Linda Johnson was critical in the organization's development. "I would like to personally thank Linda Johnson for her service to the PPA as its first Chairwoman, and in her continued service as a board member as we take the organization to its next level," stated Bolcerek.

Beware the New Breed of Poker Site
The resent actions the Justice Department have taken are beginning to create the exact kind of poker site the U.S. Government says it's protecting it's citizens from. The legitimate poker sites and funding operations have slowly begun closing their doors to U.S. customers which is forcing the truly fraudulent sites to rise to the top. The kind that don't mind if they screw over their customers or break any laws.
Example number one, Landmark Poker. This sorry excuse for a site has kept it's doors open to the U.S. but is so poorly managed that anyone fool enough to deposit there is bound to lose their bankroll for sure. They have recently merged with Wingows, another site to be cautious of and in the process have made it impossible for many of their players to access their accounts. If you try to open Landmark you get a notice stating:
With this notice you are locked out from any option but that of closing out and restarting the application. When you do this you are just caught in a loop as the same message keeps coming up. If you follow the next step they advise which is downloading the new software from their website, you get even more frustrated when you find out it's a dead link. Having not quite yet lost your patience you might try as I did and send a WTF e-mail to support. Guess what that gets you? Absofuckolutely nothing, that's what. No reply, nothing. Thanks Uncle Sam for looking out for my best interest.

Doyles Room to Ban U.S. Players
Received this message upon logging into Doyles Room today.
NOTICE
You are receiving this message because, based on your IP address, it appears highly probable that you are located in the United States.
On October 13, 2006, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act of 2006 was signed into law. Under the Act, much Internet gambling in the United States is now potentially illegal, depending on the laws of the state where the player is located. However, as a poker room serving various operators, we do not know the players, where they are located, or even if they are playing for money or just for fun. So, we have required poker sites using our room to reject money players from states where it is illegal.
Unfortunately, some sites have not been successful in their implementation of this requirement, and given the fact that we cannot differentiate legal from illegal play, we are left with no alternative but to block all players who appear to be located in the United States. We are putting all players on notice that access to real money tables and tournaments in the poker room from the United States will be blocked as soon as the blocking technology is tested and implemented; this is currently scheduled for February 28th at 23:59 GMT.
After February 28th, although you will not be permitted to play poker, you will still be able to access the cashier function of your poker operator through the cashier tab for a limited time. We suggest that you contact your poker site’s customer service with any questions you may have.
We apologize to players who are just playing for fun, to players located in states where Internet poker may be legal, and finally to players outside the United States whose Internet traffic is being routed so as to appear to be originating in the United States.

Eye on the Future of Online Poker
Where is online poker heading. Legislation passed last October restricting banking transactions set off a panic where many poker sites shut down U.S. players accounts. The Justice Department started it's attack even before additional laws were passed with the arrest of Bet On Sports executives and then the arrest of Paradise Poker's CEO. Just recently they arrested former executives and large stock holders of Neteller, a banking tool used by many U.S. players to fund their poker accounts. Now the FBI has followed up by freezing access to Neteller accounts as part of it's ongoing investigation into the company raising doubts as to whether U.S. citizens will ever see these funds. All of this has been done without utilizing any of the provisions of the new legislation.
I personally see the number of new U.S. players shrinking although there appears to be a fair amount of novice players entering the tables from Europe and Canada. With the withdrawal of Firepay and Neteller it's only going to get harder for new players to enter the market. We all knew this was coming and there is no reason to expect a change in this decline anytime soon, if at all.
A major failing on the part of Americans and online players in general is the lack of any organized fight to overturn existing laws or efforts to get new legislation introduced into congress. Most agree that the Poker Player Alliance dropped the ball when it came to stopping passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. It has also been suggested that the PPA doesn't really have the interest of the poker player in mind but is merely a front to line the pockets of it's administrator.(see 2+2 forum thread on this subject)
The poker sites themselves have failed to lobby in their own best interest and seem to be blind sided by the events of late. Their have been attempts by 2+2 forum members to establish a non-profit organization that would work in conjunction with poker sites to further the interests of online poker but that too seem to have floundered.
With a lack of support from pro players, poker sites and the poker community in general, I'm affraid the efforts of our corrupt politicians are going to severely injure the ability of online poker players to make a profit and in affect will create the ultimate demise of online poker as we have grown to know it. In the same sentiment that many said they will never ban online poker, the lackadaisical attitude of the industry and the failure to fight back is going to create a self imposed prohibition that many said wouldn't happen.
It seems as tho Americans have become to lazy to stand up for the simple freedoms that our forefathers were willing to die for and our corrupt political system is sure willing to take advantage of it.

Play Like a Pro
Here is a great gift idea. It's a mousepad that is like having a professional poker player next to you while you are playing online. This poker cheatsheet gives you the percentage chance of improving your hand based on your number of outs. It also suggests what starting hands to play and from what position. The information also adjusts based on your playing style, loose of tight. This really will help you improve your game.

Tony G Screws U.S. Again
One of the first poker sites to close it's doors to the U.S. market was Pokerchamps a company one time run by pro poker player Tony G. Many affiliate marketers that had invested tons of time and energy promoting Champs got screwed in that deal. Shortly there after Champs actions, Tony G came out and offered to fill the void by starting a new site that would have the same type of rack back bonus program and would except U.S. players.
I personally balked at this offer but others fell for this low life's sales pitch and now after re-establishing their marketing efforts towards Tony's site, guess what? He did it again, stabbed'em right square in the back. Once bitten, twice burned.
From Tony's blog:

From Tony's blog:
It’s a very, very sad day for Tony G. There are no options for me to keep the room open to USA players.
I feel very sad for all of you good folks in the USA but your government is very aggressive right now and is running loose. Neteller money has been seized from people that have done nothing wrong. Who knows if and when it will be returned to the people it belongs to. And where will the government stop in its quest to wipe out internet poker?
My legal advice is not to close, but the hosting company in Malta also wants to close the doors to USA players. I could still keep Tony G. Poker going, since I believe poker is a game of skill, but with the USA government on a rampage, happy to freeze the funds of players that only wanted to play poker, that will put everyone at great risk as we have no way to pay our USA players.*
I am just the face in front of the site and can’t do what I would like to do. My hand was forced today and I have no say in this thing.

Hold'em Radio Has Become...
As the song goes, you have to know when to hold'em and know when to fold'em. Well, Hold'em Radio of late has become the 7/2 offset of the online poker industry.
Billing listeners as the "Radio Pirates", it's self appointed Captain, Wade Andrews has gotten carried away with his title. In tyrannical fashion he has unjustifiably deleted forum posts that differ from his own drunken opinion and when questioned why, he has told the authors, if they didn't like it they could go @#$! themselves. This to staunch supporters and paying advertisers. He and his gang of drunks...excuse me, broadcasters, have released personal information of listeners on air, made derogatory remarks about them and generally reduced his radio broadcasts to annoying drunken rants that cater to a small clique of misfits.
It has become so bad that listeners have complained that they are embarrassed to have his shows running in the background when their kids and family are around. It's irresponsible behavior like this that will eventually lead to the FCC's involvement in internet broadcasting.
It's really a shame that an idea that had such great potential for promoting the face of online poker has turned out to do just the opposite. Hold'em Radio with its obscene language, promotion of alcoholic excess and obnoxious behavior have portrayed online poker players as exactly what the politicians want you to believe, that we are all degenerate alcoholic gamblers.
If you are concerned about the future of online poker, it's time to throw Hold'em Radio in the muck and express your disapproval. E-mail poker sites that H.R advertises and tell them, if their support continues, you will be forced to play and deposit somewhere else.
